We asked you last week whether Volvo should build a smaller version of its XC90 off-roader.

Support for a baby brother to the successful XC90 is overwhelming with 96% of readers saying the car should be put into production.

Although there's still no timetable on when the model might appear, Volvo is at least now admitting that it is seriously considering producing the car, shown here as a computer-generated image.

It's unlikely to appear very soon, however. Volvo's 2006 calendar is already busy with the new C70 convertible and C30 small family car, so the earliest you're likely to hear any news on the XC50 is 2007.

The new C70 ditches the old car’s cloth top for one with a metal folding roof and goes on sale in January.

The C30 will use a shortened version of the Ford Focus platform and go on sale in the second half of the year. A rival for the likes of the Audi A3, BMW 1 Series and Volkswagen Golf, the C30 will take design cues from the 3CC concept.
