Upgrading from a supermini to a small family car could save you money, according to research by used car experts Vehicle Information Publishing.
VIP's research undermines conventional wisdom that says 'the larger the car, the more expensive it will be' - although only when you choose models from the same manufacturer.
For example, if you are considering buying a used Fiat, a Punto 1.2 16 Dynamic 5dr on a 2003 03-plate with 30,000 miles can set you back £4900 at an independent franchised dealer. The larger Stilo with the same engine, age and mileage costs £4450 - that's £450 less.
It's similar with Ford. A 2003 Ford Focus 1.8 LX 5dr on an 03-plate with 30,000 miles is likely to cost £6150. A comparative Mondeo should cost you around £6075.
Vauxhall buyers could get a 2004 1.8-litre Vectra Life 5dr model on an 04 plate with 20,000 miles for £6700, where as a 1.8-litre Astra of the same age an mileage costs £250 more.
