Nottingham, Manchester and Sheffield are the car-crime capitals of England, according to a new report.

Ranked top out of 57 cities, Nottingham suffered 40 car crimes per 1000 residents in 2005.

At the other end of the scale, Ashford in Kent saw just nine crimes per 1000, in a report by think-tank Reform, which was published in What Car?'s sister magazine, Autocar.

Based on figures obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, Reform analysed police reports of stolen vehicles and car break-ins. There were 400,089 thefts of, and from, cars in the cities surveyed.
