Car makers: protect pedestrians better! - What is Euro NCAP?

12 June 2007
Pedestrian safety ratings for cars are produced by Euro NCAP, but what is it and what does it do?

Euro NCAP is an organisation of safety-related groups set up to test the crash performance of new cars.

It conducts frontal impact tests at 40mph, side impact tests at 30mph and a side-on collision with a pole at 17mph, as well as the pedestrian test, which is measured at 25mph.

It was originally set up by the Transport Road Research Laboratory in the UK, and now also includes interested parties from Germany, France, Holland and Sweden.
