Car of the Year 2004 - Roadster

10 January 2004
Winner
BMW Z4 2.2i
£24,255

With its sharp handling, near-perfect weight distribution, tenacious grip and superbly weighted steering, the Z4 instantly expunged all memories of its unsatisfying predecessor, the Z3, when it arrived last year.

Our preferred model uses the 170bhp 2.2-litre six-cylinder engine, which revs sweetly and endows the Z4 with decent performance. It’s mated to a sweet-changing five-speed manual gearbox.

The 2.2 model serves up a lengthy list of standard equipment, including electric windows, air-conditioning and a CD player. Twin front and side airbags are standard and a host of electronic stability systems are in place to curb any over-enthusiasm.

The hood is also a cinch to operate. The Z4 has the fastest fully automatic electric roof in the world and the rear windscreen is made of glass and heated for greater refinement, better rearward vision and extra security. The boot is big enough for a couple of soft weekend bags, too.

The Z4 is a modern roadster that’s equally happy thrashing down a twisting country lane as it is pootling around town. You’ll end up with a smile on your face after doing both, and this versatility makes the Z4 a true everyday proposition.
