Car of the Year 2004 - Small family car

10 January 2004
Winner
VW Golf 1.6 FSi S 5dr
£14,205

For 30 years drivers have kept up an enduring love affair with the Volkswagen Golf due to its impeccable build quality, outstanding residuals and unimpeachable image.

Latterly, the Golf has been found wanting compared with sharper-driving competition. However, that has changed with the arrival of the stunning new Golf Mark V.

The new car is based on a stiff wide-bodied platform and uses the latest all-round independent suspension, which have transformed the Golf’s drive. Crisp steering, strictly controlled body movements and astonishing grip mean corners can be tackled with glee. At lower speeds over coarser surfaces the ride feels firm but at higher rates that rigidity translates to impressive straight-line stability and a secure drive.

VW charges plenty for the Golf, so we find it difficult to look beyond the £14,205 entry-level 1.6 FSi. The engine employs VW’ latest FSi direct-injection system and a six-speed gearbox to boost performance, maximise fuel economy and minimise CO2 emissions. As a result, company car drivers will pay tax on just 18% of the Golf’s list price.

Inside, all the lush trim and impeccable build quality that we’ve come to expect of the Golf are now supplemented by more interior space and a great driving position.

The Golf is packed with the latest safety kit, including ESP traction control, twin front airbags and curtain ’bags that extend the full length of the cabin.
