Mercedes-Benz C220 CDI Estate SE
Mileage: 27,000
Run by: Neil Williams
What Car? says

The Merc is piling on the miles – 27,000 in just 10 months. Thankfully, it's a fabulous long-distance cruiser, but it's also the small details that make life with the C-Class so easy.

Take the speed limiter: just press the cruise control stalk and the limiter kicks in, perfect for driving through roadworks or on roads that have average-speed cameras.

Then there's the Comand rotary controller: it's also easy to use, so I can answer or reject a phone call, or change the radio station or CD track without taking my eyes off the road.

Nissan 350Z Coupe GT
Mileage: 12,200
Run by: Matt Sanger
What Car? says

You should always keep your car's engine in tip-top condition, especially when it's a 3.5-litre V6 that pumps out 309bhp like the 350Z's. So, as soon as the Zed reached 12,000 miles, it was off to WLMG Nissan in Hanwell (0845 811 0416) for its first service.

You can't run a car like the 350Z on the cheap, but the £250 invoice was reasonable, especially as the work was carried out on time, the car was valeted and the staff were some of the most professional I've ever met. If only all garages were this good.

BMW 320d Convertible M Sport
Mileage: 14,900
Run by: Steve Fowler
What Car? says

Acting deputy editor Euan Doig grabbed the keys to the BMW for a week-long jaunt to his native Scotland, where it proved the perfect companion. Scottish weather is famous for providing all four seasons in one day, so the rapid roof was perfect, while the average economy of 48mpg kept him happy.

He even took in a track day with a friend at Oulton Park in Cheshire on the way back down. The Three was perfectly relaxing transport after a day's high-speed track action in a Porsche.

Ford Fiesta 1.6 Ti-VCT Zetec S
Mileage: 12,500
Run by: Euan Doig
What Car? says

I absolutely love driving the Fiesta: no matter what road I'm on, be it motorway, back-road or urban rat-run, it's utterly brilliant. It's a real hoot on the B-roads around my home in Oxfordshire, where it encourages me to be 'enthusiastic' in my driving style.

Perhaps that's why, with 12,000 miles under the Fiesta's wheels, I had to stick in half a litre of oil to bring everything back up to the maximum mark. Still, that's pretty low oil use for an engine that's designed to be revved hard.

Nissan Qashqai +2 2.0 dCi Tekna 4WD
Mileage: 13,500
Run by: John Bradshaw
What Car? says

The Qashqai didn't disappoint when it recently ferried two adults, two children and a couple of bikes on a family holiday to the Dordogne in the south of France. The bike rack fitted straight onto the optional towbar (£491, plus fitting) and held our two bikes effortlessly, while the separate lights and numberplate made the set-up safe.

Over the long distances, the Nissan was comfortable and easy to drive, helped by the automatic gearbox. The kids had plenty of room in the back and loved being able to see up through the panoramic sunroof.

Audi A4 1.8 TFSI S line
Mileage: 18,500
Run by: Iain Reid
What Car? says

You know when you see someone attractive, but spot some flaw in their beauty – a spot, perhaps – and then can't help but stare at it? Well, it's like that with the A4. It looks stunning in the Garnet Red paint, but my eye is drawn to a tiny stone chip on the bonnet. It's spoiling everything, so a touch-up is required.

Toyota iQ 1.0 VVT-i 2
Mileage: 6500
Run by: Steven Huntingford
What Car? says

Small cars inevitably have small boots, so it's hardly surprising that my tiny iQ has virtually no boot at all. To carry luggage, I usually have to fold the rear seats flat. However, there is a space between the front seats that's just big enough for one bag of shopping – handy when I don't want it to slide around.
