I have a love-hate relationship with my Evo. I love it when it’s scything through corners and blasting out of them, but I hate it when I’m driving it slowly, or when I look at the fuel range.
It’s frustrating, because the Evo is easy to live with. Yes, the ride’s firm and it’s noisy over coarse surfaces, but it’s bearable. There’s plenty of room inside, so taking people out in it isn’t a problem.
No, it’s the smaller things that grate. Our SST version’s semi-auto gearbox takes an age to get the car moving away from a standstill – there’s lots of revs and noise, but not a lot of motion. It can make entering busy roads and roundabouts frustrating at best and decidedly hairy at worst. The large turning circle is a pain when manoeuvring, too.
Still, all it takes is a twisty road and all is right in the world of Evo ownership. Even the ’box comes into its own: the wheel-mounted paddles mean you can keep both hands on the wheel when changing gear. If only the fuel range was more than 200 miles.
All this hard cornering has taken its toll on the tyres, too. Still, I reckon there’s enough tread left for a track day. Plus, there are lots of corners on a racetrack.
