The cost of producing catalytic converters is set to plummet, following a technical breakthrough.

Mazda claims it has found a way of using 90% less platinum and palladium in its converters, which reduce the toxicity of an engine's emissions.

With prices of both rare materials rising, the breakthrough is expected to protect consumers from potential price rises without affecting emission levels.

However, Mazda has yet to set a date for when its new-style catalyst will be used on production cars.
