These computer-generated images are very close to what Volkswagen's first real compact 4x4 will look like when it goes on sale next year.
A smaller brother for the Touareg, the new Golf-based model is tipped to be called Bedouin. It will be a key rival for the new Land Rover Freelander, which will be unveiled at the British Motor Show in London in June.
The sloping coupe roofline of the concept shown at the Geneva motor show last week is almost certain to be dropped, as are the unusual rear doors which open backwards for easier access to the cabin.
Volkswagen will expand into a number of new niches over the coming years. New launches will include a roadster developed from the Concept R study, which is also built on the Golf platform, and is likely to arrive in 2007.
An Audi Allroad-style 4x4 version of the Passat estate is thought to be in the pipeline, as well as a four-door coupe similar to the Mercedes CLS. Volkswagen will also revive the Scirocco name in a new two-door coupe in 2008.
