Chevrolet has named its first ever 4x4 the Captiva, and has released the first image of the car.

Expected to cost from £17,000 when it goes on sale in the UK next summer, the Captiva will be available with either five or seven seats and will be powered by a new 2.0-litre, 150bhp turbodiesel, or by a 2.4-litre, 140bhp petrol engine.

Built on the same platform as Vauxhall's new sporty 4x4, the Antara, the Captiva will come in either two- or four-wheel drive and joins a growing band off-roaders to hit the UK market.

Toyota's new Rav4 will be in UK showrooms by February, while the Antara is expected in the summer. Orders are now being taken on Audi's first seven-seater 4x4, the Q7, which also goes on sale next summer.

A new Freelander from Land Rover is expected in October, while Subaru's Tribeca is due a month later in November.

Saab – General Motors stablemates of Vauxhall and Chevrolet – is developing the 9-4X, a compact 4x4, due in 2007. It is being designed independently and not to be based on the Antara.

The Captiva will be unveiled at next year's Geneva Motor Show in March and gets its first UK showing at the British International Motor Show in June.
