The Citroen C4 Cactus could eventually spawn a range of models, according to the company's boss.

The C4 Cactus concept, shown at the Frankfurt motor show, has been designed to herald a whole new look and philosophy for Citroen ‘C-line’ cars. The first production model will be closely related to the concept and go on sale early next year. It will eventually replace the current C4 hatch.

However, Citroen boss Frederic Banzet told What Car? that new design could be extended to include the replacements for the current C3 and C5. ‘The philosophy can be adapted and we need to be innovative and bring new things to the market,’ he said.

A senior Citroen design source also admitted that the C4 Cactus is the first stage in reinventing the mainstream Citroen range. However, he was clear to point out that all models would have the same design simplicity, inside and out, but would not look the same. ‘We can scale the car up and down,’ he said. ‘They will all have the two-tier headlights and 3D rear lights, but they must have their own ideas. For instance some cars could have a grille treatment.’

Citroen also has big plans to expand the DS brand, according to Banzet. Three new DS models are expected within 12 months, including an SUV. However, Citroen’s boss also revealed that the company is looking into a DS version of the C4 Picasso MPV. ‘We know that premium brands are moving into that segment so it’s a possibility.’
