Citroen DS4 driven - Introduction

Citroen's second offering under the umbrella of its DS sub-brand is a mid-sized car that defies all attempts to be pigeon-holed.

The French insist it's a coupe and will market it as such, priced somewhere between a Renault Mégane Coupe and a Volkswagen Scirocco.

Yet with its high stance (it has three centimetres more ground clearance than the C4 it is based on) and five doors, it might be seen as a rival for anything from an Audi A3 or Alfa Romeo Giulietta to a Nissan Qashqai, reckons Citroen.

The DS4 takes the place in the Citroen line-up of the old three-door C4 coupe, which itself was a strikingly different car to its mechanically identical five-door hatchback stablemate.

Buyers liked the style of the previous coupe, Citroen says, but weren't as taken with its practicality. The aim with the DS4 was to deliver style and usability in equal measure with premium-car feel and content – and it has.
