Q) I need to choose a new company car, but I'm stuck between the Audi A3 2.0 TDI 140 Sport 3dr and the Volkswagen Golf 2.0 TDI GT 3dr. Which will be cheaper to run, and which would you recommend?
Alex Brown

A) In short, the Golf and the Golf. Company car tax is calculated using carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, fuel type and the car's total price. While both cars emit exactly the same amount of CO2, the Audi costs £2070 more, so you'd pay tax on £3721 rather than £3348 (the actual amount taken from your pay packet each month will depend on how much you earn).

Both cars share many components, because Audi is part of the Volkswagen Group. However, the Volkswagen is more modern and cheaper. Unless having a premium badge is important to you, we'd definitely choose the Golf.
