Congestion rises 86% in 26 years

Road traffic has increased 84% since 1980, according to latest Government figures.

A Department for Transport report also reveals that the most congested routes are becoming slower.

Between July 2005 and August 2007, delays on the worst 10% of journeys increased from 3 minutes 47 seconds for every 10 miles travelled to 4 minutes 10 seconds.

Average journey times during the same 25-month period increased from 13 minutes 24 seconds per 10 miles to 13 minutes 48 seconds.
