Alfa Romeo's new supermini, the Junior, could look something like this

This could be how Alfa 's new supermini is shaping up.

Codenamed the Junior, the three-door hatch is expected to go on sale in the UK in the first half of next year. Junior is a name Alfa has used in the past and could adopt for the newcomer.

It's tipped to be available with a hot turbocharged 1.8-litre engine which could have as much as 230bhp - enough to put it at the forefront of supermini power league tables.

Based on the same platform as the Fiat Grande Punto, the supermini is the first of four all-new models due from Alfa. The 147 small family car will be replaced in 2009 when the 169 executive car will also be introduced.

Then, in 2010, the company is planning a road-focussed 4x4, which could take its cues from the Kamal concept unveiled in 2003.
