Council may remove road markings

Soon road markings may be removed to force drivers to be more careful

Aberdeenshire councillors are considering removing white lines from some of their roads in a bid to reduce accidents.

The system, known as psychological traffic calming, works by forcing drivers to slow down because they are uncertain where the edges of the road are.

Neil Greig from the Institute of Advanced Motorists told the BBC: 'The theory is, if you create uncertainty in the mind of the driver, they will slow down, back off, look around, and proceed more safely.'

A similar scheme in Wiltshire has already been judged a success, as have experiments in Holland and across Scandinavia.
