The car: Audi A4 2.0 TDI Ultra
The saving: £4213
The discounted price: £24,107
The broker:

The 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine fitted to the Ultra version of this A4 is refined, quiet, economical (it'll do a claimed average of 67.3mpg), and it's punchy. It's mated to a slick-shifting six-speed manual transmission.

SE trim is the starting point in the range and is our favourite. It includes climate control, Bluetooth, cruise control, alloys, automatic lights and wipers and rear parking sensors.

It's a bargain too, being cheaper to buy than both the BMW 3 Series and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. It's also predicted to hold on to its value very well, which keeps down running costs.

It feels a lot older than its main rivals. Where the 3 Series manages to be both comfortable and engaging to drive, the A4 isn't. It's neither as much fun nor as comfortable. The steering feels rubbery, too.

The interior feels at least a generation behind those of its main rivals. The layout of its buttons and switches is a little confusing, and the materials are nowhere near as good as those in the new C-Class.

There are a few other niggles on the A4. The pedals are extremely off-set, so you sit skewed, and the small rear window compromises rear visibility.

Should I add any options?
We’d recommend sticking with SE trim. It’s well equipped and higher trims bring with them sports suspension and big alloys that spoil the ride quality.

For diesel SEs there is a Technik pack that adds leather seats and satellite-navigation preparation for the infotainment system, which is well worth considering.

On top of this, already generous, deal you can elect to take Audis finance scheme, which drops a further £2150 from the price.
