For
The 74.3mpg BMW 116d is the most economical 1 Series by a stretch, and it's also cheap to run in the long run because of its strong resale values. It isn't hampered by its focus on economy, though, because it'll still cover the 0-60mph dash in a decent 10.5 seconds.

It grips well and feels genuinely balanced and nimble; it's much sharper to drive than a Mercedes-Benz A-Class. It rides well, too, feeling sophisticated both around broken city streets and on the motorway.

Company car buyers will be enticed by the 116d ED, which emits just 99g/km of CO2 and sits in the lowest tax band. The 1 Series is a good choice for private buyers, too, because of its high mpg and resale values, and low annual VED costs.

The 1 Series performed well in the most recent JD Power survey, with few owners reporting any mechanical problems with their cars. Every model comes with six airbags and stability control, and it received the full five-star rating from crash test body Euro NCAP.

Against
Competitors such as the Volkswagen Golf are more refined. The engine is quite gruff and, at low revs, transmit vibrations through the pedals and gearstick. You can hear the suspension working over lumps and bumps, too.

It can be tricky to find a comfortable driving position because the pedals don’t line up with the steering wheel, and visibility isn’t great; the small side and rear windows also make the rear feel claustrophobic.

The boot is both narrower and shallower than the best in class.
