For
The 2 Series Active Tourer is a double whammy for BMW: it's the company's first MPV and it's the first model with front-wheel drive.

Inside, it’s practical with plenty of head- and legroom for passengers and an evenly shaped 468-litre boot. The switch to front-wheel-drive means there’s no transmission tunnel, freeing up more rear legroom.

Clear and sensible controls help to make the cabin a straightforward and classy place to be, while equipment levels are good, with USB input, Bluetooth, DAB radio, rear parking sensors, alloys and auto lights and wipers standard on SE models.

Refinement and handling are, as you’d expect from BMW, excellent, striking a nice balance between compliance and controllability. The 2.0-litre diesel in the 218d has plenty of power to make relaxed progress.

Against
The Citroen C4 Picasso is bigger inside and has three individual rear seats, meaning three can travel in the back in comfort. While the 2 Series Active Tourer is good to drive, a Volkswagen Golf SV is sharper still and has similar interior space.

The ride suffers slightly at low speeds, becoming busy over rough and scarred road surfaces.

The manual gearbox has a notchy feeling which doesn’t suit the composed, well-engineered character of the car.

Should I add any options?
As mentioned, SE trim is well equipped and comes with most of the kit you’re likely to need, so we’d save the money and spec wisely.

Upgrade to Sport or Luxury trims to add sports or leather seats and larger alloys, while top-spec M Sport cars get M Sports seats, suspension and alloys.
