For
The BMW 520d is a sensational car to drive and own, which is why What Car? awarded it five stars.

The 181bhp four-cylinder diesel is powerful and efficient, with punchy performance and average fuel economy of 57.6mpg. It works perfectly alongside the eight-speed automatic gearbox.

Inside, the cabin is roomy and feels high quality It will comfortably seat four, as well as swallow their luggage in the 560-litre boot.

The 520d also benefits from excellent long-term resale values, which make up for the high list price.

Against
The ride and handling on the standard suspension are not good enough, but you can transform the dynamics by adding the adjustable suspension, although this option is not cheap.

Engine noise does intrude into the cabin at times, plus some wind noise, which develops around the wing mirrors when you're travelling at motorway speeds.

Finally, the overall cabin practicality is slightly hampered by the large transmission tunnel, which is awkward if you happen to be sitting in the middle of the rear bench seat.

Should I add any options?
As mentioned, start by adding the Variable Damper Control. It will set you back £985 but it is essential.

Other options include a head-up display (£995), a rear entertainment package with TV function (£2800), active cruise control (£1330), LED headlights (£1495) and a 3D surround-view parking camera (£530).
