For
The Toyota Yaris Hybrid may be the perfect partner for the motorist who spends most of their time in the city. Its hybrid system can propel the car under electric power at low speeds, so it’s very efficient around town.

Its rear accommodation is more spacious than rivals such as the Ford Fiesta and Peugeot 208. There’s also almost no transmission tunnel so the central rear-seat passenger will at least have somewhere to put their feet.

There’s loads of safety kit; seven airbags are distributed around the cabin should the worst happen, and stability control helps ensure that you don’t crash in the first place.

This mid-spec Icon model is generously equipped and comes with a colour touch-screen, Bluetooth and a reversing camera as standard. For a small fee you can upgrade the system to have satellite-navigation, too.

Against
It’s quite numb to drive. The steering is weighted fairly consistently but feels vague when travelling in a straight line, meaning that motorway journeys are spent constantly correcting your line.

The motorway isn’t the Yaris’s natural habitat. The hybrid system has no effect at those speeds and you'll find the car hasn’t got much power for overtaking. This is a car best left on the city streets.

Interior quality isn’t up to the class best either – most of the plastics used are hard. Taller drivers may find that the steering wheel doesn’t quite adjust enough to get truly comfortable.

Should I add any options?
The Icon trim level comes with most of the kit you could reasonably want on a supermini. The standard-fit infotainment touch-screen can be upgraded with sat-nav for a small fee.
