For
The Volkswagen Polo is one of the most refined superminis on sale. The engine is quiet and at motorway speeds it suppresses wind and road noise well.

The 1.2 TSi engine is powerful, too. It may have only 89bhp but it is punchy at all revs. It's smoother than the three-cylinder engines in rivals, too.

Inside the Polo is, again, a cut above its adversaries. The quality of the materials is faultless, all the switches operate with a nicely damped action, and the layout is logical and clear.

Our favourite SE trim comes with the aforementioned colour touch-screen, alloy wheels, air-conditioning, remote central locking, electric rear windows and steering wheel-mounted audio controls. It also has a height-adjustable boot floor.

Against
The Polo is good to drive and rides nicely but it simply isn't as sgood to drive as its main rival, the Ford Fiesta

The latest Polo's suspension is firmer than before, which makes the ride too bumpy, even if the car deals quite well with corners.

The 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine we’ve recommended is great, but other engines aren't as good. The small 1.0-litre petrols require lots of revs and the 1.4-litre diesel is clattery.

Should I add any options?
Options include navigation preparation for the touch-screen, voice control, Alcantara upholstery and adaptive cruise control, but we'd steer clear – the Polo is well-enough equipped as standard.

An additional £1000 can be taken off the price if you elect to take Volkswagen's finance deal to pay for the car.
