Chevrolet has unveiled two coupe concept cars at the Detroit motor show 2012: the Tru 140S and Code 130R. Both are aimed at younger buyers and production versions would use 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engines.

The 140S is sporty and futuristic, and Chevrolet says it takes inspiration from classic Italian sportscars, but we think there’s a hint of Vauxhall Astra GTC in there too.

It has a front-wheel-drive layout and is based on the Chevrolet Cruze platform.

The Chevrolet Code 130R concept car is all about ‘pure functional muscle’, Chevrolet says.

GM’s North America president Mark Reuss said the car was not retro in its design, but he conceded the 130R provides ‘a link to Chevrolet’ rich performance heritage.’

We think the 130R has a definite retro element to it, as well as a suggestion of BMW 1 Series. It’s a great-looking car in the metal, though, with bold, muscular styling and neat proportions.

Neither concept cars have functional interiors yet. Chevrolet says it wants input from potential buyers before finalising the designs. Visitors to the show will be able to have their say and Chevrolet will also canvas opinion at various other locations throughout the US.

Chevrolet’ press conference at the show focused on capturing the imagination of younger buyers. Along with the Tru 140S and Code 130R concept cars, it displayed the 2013 Chevrolet Spark and 2013 Sonic RS, which is sold as the Aveo in the UK.
