Detroit motor show 2009 - Fisker Karma

11 January 2009
At last year's Detroit motor show it was a concept car – now Fisker Automotive's four-seater Karma hybrid sports car is production ready.

It combines a 260bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine with two electric motors, a generator and lithium-ion batteries to deliver up to 408bhp.

It can also do up to 50 miles in all-electric mode.

All that power also means pretty brisk pace: top speed is 125mph, and 0-62mph takes 5.8sec.

Prices for the Karma start from $87,900 (around £60,000) and first deliveries are scheduled for November 2009.

However, the order books have already been open for sometime, and the company says that every car it can build is spoken for until mid-2010.

Fisker Sunset
As a result of the demand for the Karma, perhaps you'd be better off laying down a deposit on Fisker's latest creation, the Sunset concept car.

It uses the same aluminium spaceframe construction technique as the Karma, but has two electric motors, combing to give 397bhp.

The four-seater convertible has a retractable hardtop.
