Detroit motor show 2009 - Subaru Legacy concept

Some manufacturers give their concept cars wacky names that leave you to work out what model they are giving you a taste of.

Others, like the Subaru Legacy concept car, are considerably more obvious.

So, this is a forerunner to the next Subaru Legacy saloon, which is expected to go on sale in 2010.

Flared wheelarches and an imposing front end demonstrate more aggressive styling than on the current model.

The concept car has a 3.6-litre engine and four-wheel-drive, but European markets are expected to be able to choose from a choice of 2.0- and 2.5-litre petrol engines plus a 2.0-litre diesel.

Estates and higher-riding Outback models will join the saloon at a later date.
