Drivers who cut their carbon emissions over the Christmas break could claim their share of £68m in fuel savings, according to the Department for Transport (DfT).

As many of Britain's motorists rack up hundreds of miles over the festive period, the DfT reckons a few simple steps could save drivers money and cut out 182,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

Checking that your car's tyres are correctly inflated, changing gear early, and removing clutter from your car to reduce its weight are a few of the tips from the DfFT's Act on CO2 campaign. Log on to www.dft.gov.uk/ActOnCO2 for the full list.

Transport Minister, Jim Fitzpatrick, said: 'With many of us travelling to visit family and friends over Christmas time, we'll be clocking up extra miles and increasing our carbon emissions.

'If you do have to travel by car, smarter driving will help tackle climate change and save money at the same time.'
