Dodge, the latest American car manufacturer to dip a toe into the UK market, today revealed two new models scheduled to arrive here in 2007.
The company officially launches in the UK in July with the Caliber, a European-sized, front-wheel-drive, five-door family hatchback that looks a bit like a compact off-roader.
The initial launch range of 1.8- and 2.0-litre petrol engines and a 2.0-litre Volkswagen turbodiesel will be pepped up in the first half of next year with the arrival of the high-performance SRT-4, unveiled today at the Chicago Auto Show.
SRT-4 (the initials stand for Street Race Technology) will be powered by a 2.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine developing 300bhp and 260lb ft of pull.
That kind of performance will force Dodge to adopt the four-wheel-drive system available on lesser Calibers in the United States. Tuned suspension, a more aggressive exterior and a sporty interior distinguish it from the rest of the range.
Dodge claims a 0-60mph time of less than six seconds for SRT-4, making it a strong rival for the likes of the Subaru Impreza WRX and the forthcoming Mitsubishi Lancer Evo. Expect a price lower than the WRX's £22,400.
Around the same time, Dodge will introduce the Nitro, a medium-sized, five-seater 4x4 based on the new Jeep Cherokee. It will use Chrysler/Jeep petrol engines and Mercedes turbodiesels, and is likely to start at less than £18,000.
Dodge is committed to offering right-hand-drive and diesel engines with all future mainstream models. However, the giant Ram pick-up truck and SRT-10 (Viper) sports car will continue to be sold here in limited numbers with left-hand drive.
