Drink-drive campaign launched

The Government has launched its Christmas drink-drive campaign, which this year is targeting young men.

The television, radio and internet campaign is based around the message of how driving when even slightly over the limit can ruin lives.

It will also address the problem of drug-driving, amid growing concerns about the problem.

Road Safety Minister Jim Fitzpatrick said: 'Drink-driving ruins lives. Last year, 540 people died in this pointless, avoidable way.

'Being caught has serious consequences – a criminal record, minimum one-year driving ban and a large fine. It's just not worth paying this price for a couple of drinks.'

More than 500,000 drivers were stopped and breathalysed last year.

Young men are being specifically targeted because evidence suggests they are more likely to drink-drive than any other section of society.
