UK drink-drive limits could fall in line with most of the rest of Europe within 18 months.
Government ministers are considering dropping the UK limit from 80mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood to 50mg - the equivalent of one small glass of wine or a pint of beer.
If approved, the proposals could be introduced before the end of next year.
The reduction could result in up to 200,000 drivers a year losing their licences - double the present number.
Road safety experts, who have long campaigned for the cut, say the move would save up to 65 lives a year.
The Government is also looking to give the police wider powers to introduce random breath-testing.
