Driver's guide to Going Green - Adopt a greener lifestyle

09 March 2006
Offset your own carbon
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the main greenhouse gas produced by vehicle transport. You can offset your car's contribution by joining a scheme such as Climate Care. You pay an annual fee; they plant trees and invest in green energy to counter your carbon pollution.

Don't take the car
Do you really need to drive the children to school? Or take your car to the shops? Consider walking, or using your bike, if the trip is short. For longer journeys, plan to use the bus or train.

Take eco-holidays
Rather than take the car or a long-haul flight on holiday, consider one of the new green packages gaining in popularity. You can still travel the world – just pay more attention to how you get there and where you stay when you arrive.

Save water
Don't use car washes – they use more water than a trusty bucket and sponge. Also consider using an environmentally friendly shampoo.

Change your lifestyle
If you moved to a city or town, could you benefit from better public transport? Could you work from home more often, rather than drive to the office?

Build a green garage
Don't build a concrete garage - try building a wooden one made from sustainable natural materials.

Recycle
This applies to your car – and the things in it. Don't throw away litter and petrol receipts, recycle them. Make sure you sell your car on, or get it appropriately recycled at the end of its life.
