The majority of motorists back proposals to make drivers aged over 70 retake their driving test, according to an exclusive whatcar.com poll.
The survey discovered that 61% of respondents were in favour of the proposals, 36% were against and 3% were undecided.
The Driver and vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) recently recommended that drivers aged 70 took a paper-based test to assess their abilities.
At present, from the age of 70 motorists are only required to declare their medical condition every three years.
However, no independent checks are made, so the system relies on honesty.
Statistics from the Association of British Insurers suggest that drivers aged 70 and over are three times more likely to be killed or seriously injured in a road crash than those aged between 40 and 65.
