Eight new cars have been shortlisted for the coveted Car of the Year title rather than the usual seven.

The nominees are the Citroën C4 Picasso, Fiat Grande Punto, Ford S-Max, Honda Civic, Peugeot 207, Skoda Roomster, Vauxhall Corsa and Volvo C30.

If the panel of international judges couldn't even decide on a shortlist, choosing an overall winner for Monday, November 13 could be tricky.

Going on previous form, Fiat's got the best chance – it has won the international Car of the Year title seven times before, most recently with the new Panda in 2004. Citroen has won three times before, with the GS in 1971, the CX in 1975 and the XM in 1990, while Ford, Peugeot and Vauxhall have all won twice before.

Honda, Skoda and Volvo are the outside chances – they’ve never won before.

What Car?'s own Car of the Year will be crowned at a glittering ceremony in London in January next year. BMW's 3 Series is our current title holder.
