Honda is ending production of its Insight petrol-electric two-seater this summer, but says a replacement is on the way in 2009.
Although Honda stopped selling the car in the UK last winter, US buyers are still able to buy the car. So far this year, however, just 320 Insights have found new homes in the US, compared with more than 30,000 Toyota Prius.
Honda also now has its more practical Civic hybrid to rival the Prius.
The current Insight is able to return 83mpg on the combined cycle, compared with 65.7mpg for the Prius and 57.7mpg for the Civic. Carbon dioxide emissions of 80g/km are also 24g/km below the Toyota and 36g/km better than the Civic.
