From launch, two 2.0-litre diesels will be available, with either 108 and 138bhp. In time, 89bhp and 168bhp diesel engines will be added to the range.

The lower powered unit averages 62.6mpg and emits 119g/km of carbon dioxide, while the higher powered unit averages 57.5mpg and emits 129g/km of CO2.

Four petrol engines will be available from launch, with between 81bhp and 158bhp.

The 81bhp engine will be the most frugal, averaging 44.0 mpg and emit 149g/km of CO2.

The petrol engines, with 120bhp and 158bhp, will be small capacity turbocharged units to offer improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions.

Apart from the lowest powered petrol and diesel engines, all variants will be available with either six- or seven-speed versions of VW's semi-automatic DSG gearbox, which further lowers fuel consumption.

Fuel consumption has been improved by up to 28% in the new range.
