These computer-generated images show how the Audi A7 could look when it goes on sale in late 2009.

The Mercedes CLS rival will be based on the A6 executive car, and we'll probably see a concept version at the 2008 New York Auto Show.

Up to six engine options are expected to be available: among the petrol engines could be 3.0-litre V6, 4.2-litre V8 and 5.0-litre non-turbo and turbo V10 petrols, while 3.0-litre V6 and 4.2-litre V8 diesels are tipped to make up the range.

Prices are likely to begin at £35,000 and reports already suggest a soft-top model could follow.

Meanwhile, Mercedes is readying a face-lift for the CLS saloon in 2008, before an all-new replacement arrives in 2011.
