Another year, another used family car category win for the Ford Mondeo. Sure, other cars can rival the Mondeo for interior space, refinement and practicality, but nothing else does it all at such an incredibly low price.

This family hatchback is a comfortable cruiser for covering motorway miles, yet it’s still great fun to drive. It’s also spacious inside, with ample head- and legroom for everyone, and it feels solid and well put together. The 528-litre boot will swallow everything a family has to throw at it, and split-folding rear seats mean a huge amount of extra space is on hand if needed.

The 2.0-litre 138bhp diesel is the engine most suited to the Mondeo. It has plenty of get-up-and-go, and it doesn’t like to shout about it. An official average of 47.9mpg is decent, while diesels also have far better residual values than the petrol models.

Zetec trim is our favourite because it comes with alloy wheels, climate control and rear electric windows.

On top of all that, the Mondeo achieved an important five-star Euro NCAP crash test rating. For families after a used car, these features can make or break a deal.

There are plenty of used Mondeos on the market and such a huge choice keeps prices down. Whichever model you plump for, there’s no need to worry about reliability, because only trim rattles and keyless-entry systems are proving most troublesome for owners.

Runners-up

Mazda 6
2.2D TS2
’09/09, £10,010

This version of the 6 is larger than the car it replaced but it’s actually lighter. The weight loss helps make it nimble and economical.

2.0 TDI SE
’07/07, £6940

While the interior quality may not be quite up to Audi standards, it’s still well ahead of what the Vauxhall Vectra and the Mondeo offer.

'The Mondeo leaves others in the shade when it comes to performance and driveability – you won’t beat it for running costs either.'
