FAQ Special - Is paint protection worth the money?

24 August 2006
Are paint and upholstery protection products worth it? I'm being asked for £100s for the treatment.

A: These kinds of treatments can be worth the expense depending on where you park and what you use your car for.

The transparent layer applied over the car's paintwork does provide added protection against atmospheric agents such as UV light, so should keep the car looking brighter for longer. If you have to park near trees, it can also protect against the corrosive effects of sap and bird droppings.

Interior trim and upholstery can also be protected with a spray that encourages spilt drinks to bead and run off the surface and which can better withstand attack from mucky-handed children.

So if you park near trees loaded with flocks of birds and have children, such treatments can be a good idea.

The galling part of it is the huge mark up dealers slap on the products. We've seen advertised for as much as £375.

So, we'd recommend haggling for the treatment to be included in the cost of the car, once you've agreed on the best price you can get. Failing that is, or certainly bring the price down as much as you can.

Also make sure you get a certificate confirming the work has been carried out, and keep any guarantee that might be offered with the coating.
