Renault Captur review

Running cars on long-term test means we get to spot things that might otherwise go unnoticed on a relatively brief launch drive. Living with a car day-to-day means you pick up on the everyday frustrations as well as the delights.

The Captur gets plenty right. The cabin's switchgear is uncluttered and intuitively placed, and simple things like the adjustable boot floor are convenient features that make life that little bit easier.

As with most cars, there are also some everyday niggles. I've already talked about the infotainment screen that never switches off completely, but another focus for any face-lift or upgrade would be to move the SD card slot.

At the moment, the slot for the SD card (which you need for the sat-nav, among other things) is tucked at the back of a useful storage cubby hole ahead of the gear lever. I can understand why this is the case, since the same component includes the USB and stereo jack inputs - so it's where you'd want to leave your smartphone if it's charging, for example.

Nevertheless, I often use that cubby as a convenient place to throw my wallet and phone when I jump in the car and - you guessed it - these chunky items have a habit of popping the SD card out of its slot. It's easily remedied of course, but such frequent annoyances tend to really grate over time.

Renault Captur review

I'm really starting to pile the miles onto the Captur now. It's heading towards 10,000 miles in less than seven months of use, which should mean at least 15,000 by the time we hand it back to Renault.

The Captur's impressive refinement is a boon on the motorway. Wind and road noise are kept at bay, and the 89bhp diesel is reasonably quiet at 70mph - not to mention economical.

However, one niggle I've found recently is the lack of back support in the driver's seat. While there's plenty of adjustment in the seat and wheel to get comfortable before you move off, sitting behind the wheel for hundreds of miles highlights the fairly flat cushions.

Lumbar support doesn't come as standard on many - if any - cars at this price, but unfortunately Renault doesn't even offer it as an option on the Captur. So, while its seats are easy to customise to my aesthetic tastes, they're less easy to customise to my orthopedic needs.

Renault Captur review

For the last couple of weeks I’ve been detailing the ups and downs of the Renault’s touch-screen infotainment system. There are some brilliant features - including the TomTom sat-nav that’s part of R-Link - as well as some less appealing ones, like the R-Sound Effect app.

I’ve noticed what appears to be an interface glitch in the last two weeks, though. When you’ve got the sat-nav running, the volume control knob often defaults to controlling the noise level of this, rather than the radio.

If the sat-nav is giving instructions, it’s understandable that the volume control might switch functions to allow you to turn it down. However, even when there are no instructions piping out, the knob often just sticks in sat-nav mode.

The effect of this is not being able to adjust the main volume level when you’re on the move. In other words, if I want to make Chris Evans' guest a bit louder in the morning, I have to delve about six levels into the menu system to access the sliders for the volume, rather than use the convenient dashboard knob.

This is certainly a glitch rather than an eccentricity of the programming, so we’ll check if there’s a software update via the SD card to see whether that makes a difference. Renault Captur review

Renault’s R-Link infotainment system isn’t just a doorway to more fancy sat-nav software. In fact, there’s a suite of other apps and services pre-installed, which lets you do everything from checking email to getting coached on how to boost your fuel economy.

You can also add to the menu of apps by setting up an account on the R-Link store, which is straightforward enough. Once you’ve paired your account with the SD card from your Captur, you can download most apps for free - although R-Sound Effect, reported on last week, costs £4.99.

One of the most simple (but useful) apps is from The Weather Channel. Open it up once you’ve set your destination on the sat-nav, and it’ll show you the weather where you are now, plus the conditions where you’re heading.

Granted, you’ll inevitably be able to find similar apps for your smartphone, but having the information readily available on the car’s large touch-screen makes it even more convenient.
