This computer-generated image shows how the new BMW Z4 Roadster could look when it is launched in 2009.
The Porsche Boxster and Mercedes SLK-Class rival is expected to be launched with three petrol engines: an 185bhp 2.0-litre, a 231bhp 2.5-litre and turbocharged 321bhp 3.0-litre.
Insiders say that a fourth engine option, a 450bhp 4.0-litre V8, may be added after launch, depending on demand.
Reflecting BMW's eagerness to give the car a sportier feel, features will include stiffened suspension, active steering, adjustable suspension and a semi-automatic gearbox, which will greatly reduce gearchange times.
It is initially being designed as a conventional soft-top, but insiders say a folding hard-top configuration is also under development.
