This is the new Volkswagen Golf estate, which goes on sale in the UK this summer.
To be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show next week, the estate was not part of the original plan for the fifth-generation Golf. It had been thought that the Golf Plus - the taller MPV-like version of the Golf hatch - would eliminate the need for the estate, but having sold 1.2 million Golf estates since 1993, VW has decided to build a new one.
The new car offers 690 litres of boot space with the rear seats up, compared with the Golf's 350 litres and the Golf Plus's 395-505 litres. Fold the seats down and there's 1550 litres of space - that's 245 litres more than the Golf and 100 litres more than the Golf Plus. The estate's load bay is also longer than the Plus's.
A pair of petrol engines and two diesels are expected to be available, offering up to 138bhp. Expect a premium of pay around £1000 over the cost of the five-door Golf, with prices starting at around £15,400.
