These are the first official images of one of the most eagerly anticipated future cars, the Chevrolet Volt.

Chevrolet and Toyota are vying to become the first mass manufacturers of plug-in hybrids, with the Volt scheduled to go on sale in the USA 2010 and the UK in 2012.

The Volt runs on electric power only, but uses a 1.4-litre petrol engine to charge the batteries, and can also be plugged in to the mains for charging.

It is expected to be capable of 40 miles on electric power alone.
