Renault has launched a five-seater version of its Grand Scenic MPV for motorists with a hankering for added boot space.

Prices for the new Grand Scenic start at £15,165 for a 1.6-litre petrol in Authentique trim, so the newcomer works out £250 cheaper than a seven-seat version and £1000 more than a normal-sized five-seater Scenic.

A lower boot floor in the new Grand Scenic means it has more room than the seven-seater version with the seats folded away - 533 litres compared with 475 litres. The standard Scenic offers just 406 litres of space, which is only slightly more than a small family car such as a Ford Focus.

Heave out the second row of seats, and the latest five-seater Grand Scenic has less of an advantage. A maximum loadspace of 1960 litres is only 20 litres up on the seven-seater, although it does beat the standard model by 120 litres.

Renault's five-seat layout is interesting considering other activity in the compact MPV sector. Volkswagen made the seven-seat option in its Touran free soon after launch, while Toyota scrapped its five-seater Corolla Verso entirely and launched the seven-seat Verso in its place.
