Ford will unveil its new Equator 4x4 concept at the Tokyo Motor Show later this month, although the company is adamant that the production version isn’t destined for the UK.
Insiders says the Equator off-roader points to what the next Ford Escape
could look like, when it arrives in around three years. However, the Escape
is a US-only model.
Competitor Vauxhall recently announced its Frontera replacement, in the
shape of the Antara GTC concept, at the Frankfurt Motor Show. It’s destined
for the UK in late 2006.
However, Ford says it has no rival 4x4 slated for Europe any time in the next
five years. A spokesman told whatcar.com: ‘With Ford counting Land Rover
among its brands, we don’t see the need for a Ford-badged 4x4 – especially
in the UK where Land Rover is so strong.’
