Frankfurt 2009: Toyota Auris hybrid

Another motor show and another hybrid breaks cover. This time it's Toyota's all-new Auris HSD Full Hybrid concept car, which was unveiled at the Frankfurt motor show.

What is it?
The eagerly anticipated hybrid uses the same 'Hybrid Synergy Drive' technology that can be found in the new Prius. That means a 1.8-litre petrol engine working with an electric motor and an engine stop-start system to help cut emissions and improve fuel economy.

What's new?
The Auris HSD produces 97bhp and has carbon dioxide emissions of less than 100g/km, with a 0-62mph dash of around 10 seconds.
Special badging and aerodynamic tweaks differentiate the Auris hybrid from the standard car.

The Auris HSD Full Hybrid concept car also gets new front-end styling, with fresh headlights, bonnet, bumper and grille. The same changes will be applied to the entire Auris range early next year.

When can I buy one?
A production version of the new Auris hybrid is due to start in summer next year, with the first customer deliveries planned for the end of 2010.

Built in Britain
In a boost for the UK car industry, it has also been confirmed that the new hybrid will be built at Toyota's factory in Burnaston, Derbyshire, while the engines will be manufactured at its factory in Deeside, North Wales.
