Frankfurt motor show 2007 - BMW coupes

11 September 2007
There's a feast of coupes on BMW's stand, with the new two-door 1 Series appearing alongside the latest M3 and a refreshed 6 .

The 1 Series Coupe is the third bodystyle BMW has introduced for its smallest model, and it goes on sale in November for an expected premium of £1000 over the equivalent five-door model.

One of the three engines that will initially be available is an all-new twin-turbo 2.0-litre diesel in a model that will be badged 123d.

It develops 201bhp and 295lb ft of pull, yet records 54.3mpg in the official combined fuel test and emits just 138g/km of CO2.

With such fantastic all-round efficiency, it's bound to find a home in lots of other BMWs in the not-too-distant future.

Buyers will also be able to get the 1 Series Coupe as a 120d with a 175bhp 2.0-litre diesel, or a 135i with the twin-turbo 3.0-litre petrol unit from the 3 Series Coupe.

With an output of 302bhp, it turns the 135i into a flyer – 0-62mph in 5.3 seconds and a top speed of 155mph.

Other engines will be added later – and the existing 1 Series hatchbacks give plenty of clues as to the possibilities.

M3
The new M3 is BMW's first V8-engined compact coupe, and its first with a price tag over £50,000.

The car's relatively understated looks disguise the fact that there's a 4.0-litre 415bhp engine crammed beneath the bonnet, with bespoke aluminium suspension, frying pan-sized brakes and a race-specification rear differential.

6
You'll have to look hard to spot the changes to the 6 coupe, but chief among them is the option of a new 635d model powered by BMW's twin-turbo 3.0-litre diesel.

The same option is also available in the soft-top 6 , making them the first luxury diesel coupe and convertible on sale.
