Hyundai has joined the throng of manufacturers desperate to underline their green credentials at this year's Frankfurt motor show, putting an all-new hydrogen-powered concept car in pride of place on its stand.
With Hyundai's third-generation experimental fuel-cell technology, the i-Blue Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) produces zero emissions.
The car is based on a part-4x4, part-estate body platform and the company hopes to put the concept into production by 2017.
'Our engineering team has designed a more compact fuel cell vehicle, while still realising the safety, comfort, convenience and driving range of a traditional internal combustion engine vehicle,' said Dr Hyun-Soon Lee, Hyundai's president of research and development.
Adding another dimension to the stand is the
Veloster concept. Named after a combination of the words velocity and roadster, the car is a four-seater sports coupe with a panoramic roof.
It's designed to appeal to first-time car buyers in their early 20s.
But, while the two concepts are grabbing the attention, it's the
i30 estate – making its show debut here – that will definitely make it into production.
No prices have been revealed, but the five-door estate will join the i30 range in early 2008.
