Seat already has a 4x4 of sorts, in the shape of the Altea Freetrack, but the Tribu concept unveiled in Frankfurt hints at a possible future model.
If, as rumoured, a car based on the concept car makes it into production, it's more likely to be seen on roads than muddy fields, as it's not an out-and-out off-roader.
Any new vehicle is expected to be based on the
VW Tiguan and should rival Toyota's
RAV4 and Honda's
CR-V.
The concept is the work of former Lamborghini designer Luc Donckerwolke.
Features include a windscreen that extends over the passenger compartment to create a huge panoramic roof, rear lights that are positioned behind the glass so they are only visible when lit, and 20-inch chrome wheels.
The driver and three passengers have sporty bucket seats with built-in seatbelts.
Three driving settings, which adjust the engine and suspension, are available: Urban, Sport and Freerun. They are for city, motorway and track driving respectively.
Seat also unveiled the Seat Ecomotive
Ibiza, which is powered by a 1.4-litre TDI engine that emits 99g/km of carbon dioxide and records 74.3mpg.
The car benefits from improved electronics, areodynamics and weight reduction over the standard model Ibiza powered by the 1.4-litre TDI, which emits 121g/km of CO2 and records 61.4mpg.
