Trading Standards hoped its analysis of fuel samples would be completed by Friday, while Tesco said it had three independent companies testing the fuel.

Ian Hillier, lead officer for petroleum at the Trading Standards Institute, said: 'Officers are investigating these complaints and samples of fuel from some of the affected cars are currently being tested for contamination, as are the contents of the pumps from which the petrol was drawn.'

Read on to hear what they say, and to get our advice on what to do if you think you've filled up with contaminated fuel.
