Geneva Motor Show 2004 - Seat

02 March 2004
Seat wowed the crowds with the launch of its new Altea at Geneva. Billed by the company as a multi sports vehicle, the five-seat hatchback will go on UK sale in July.

In essence, it’s a sporty take on a midi-MPV and will try to attract buyers from the likes of the Nissan Almera Tino and Citroen Picasso with its stylish looks and sporty drive.

Inside, the quality has taken a step forward over that of previous Seats, and the dials sit sportily in separate recesses on the dash. There’s plenty of room in the front and the driving position is good, with a reach- and rake-adjustable steering wheel and height-adjustable driver’s seat on every model.

The rear bench is split 60/40 and each part folds down in one easy action to leave a fully flat load area, although the seats are not removable. Extra space is also available in a well under the folding boot floor where a movable net can hold smaller items in place.

S, SE and Sport trims will be available and although exact specifications have yet to be set, all models will have six airbags, anti-lock brakes, air-conditioning, a CD player and electric front windows. The engine range will include petrol and diesel units from parent company Volkswagen, starting with a 1.6 petrol.

Although prices are not confirmed, we expect it to cost between £1000 and £2000 more than an equivalent Leon hatchback, suggesting a starting price for the range of around £13,000.
